The SIVADS of March are upon us- starting tonight!

Lots of great events happening this weekend paying tribute to Watson Davis, also known as SIVAD- local horror host of “Fantastic Features” here in Memphis back in the late 60′s and early 70′s.

I’ll be a part of a horror art show at Adam Shaw’s studio (2547 Broad Avenue) this Friday, March 26th from 6-8pm.

Fellow MSCA members Adam Shaw, Greg Cravens, Kevin Williams will be showing their SIVAD and horror tribute art, as well as comic artists Dean Zachary and Jim Hall- and artist/wrestler/former Memphis mayoral candidate Jerry “The King” Lawler.

Hey gang- lots to pimp this week!
The SIVADS of March!

A four-day tribute through art, film, music and words to the late Watson Davis, the innovative Malco ad man and ballyhoo specialist known for his elaborate movie promotions and who, in his guise as the ‘horror host’ known as Sivad (on the “Fantastic Features” program from 1962 to 1972 on WHBQ-TV Channel 13), was one of the most influential and beloved Memphis pop-culture heroes of the era, with a popularity that crossed generational and racial lines. Superman Guests Announced!

The second weekend in June is devoted to the legendary character that stands for “Truth, Justice and the American Way” each year in Metropolis, Illinois. But Superman is always kind enough to share the spotlight with a few other celebrities.
Special guests have just been confirmed as headliners of the 32nd annual Superman Celebration June 10-13. Smallville fans will be excited to see this year’s celebrity line-up.
Laura Vandervoort, who portrays Supergirl/ Kara and Sam Witwer, also known as Doomsday, will be the Smallville actors headlining this year’s Celebration. And, the “First Lady of Metropolis” Noel Neill, is scheduled to make a return trip to the festival. Fans will have the opportunity to meet the celebrities in person at autograph and question and answer sessions.

Metropolis has become such a fan of Neill that the Chamber of Commerce will unveil a statue of her likeness on the second day of the Superman Celebration. Engraved bricks are currently being sold for the base that will hold the life-size sculpture of the actress.
With the unveiling planned for June 11, final engraving orders are needed at the monument company very soon. A deadline of April 16 has been set for ordering engraved bricks guaranteed to be in place for the unveiling. More information about the statue and a brick order form can be found at www.noelneillstatue.com. Orders may also be placed by calling the Chamber of Commerce at 618-524-2714 or emailing metrochamber@verizon.net.
I’ll be back again in Artists Alley/Writers Way this year- which is just down the street from where the new Noel statue will be. As soon as I find out who the other comics guests are I’ll post it here.

Dave and I are both working on sketch card sets for a couple different companies. I should be able to announce for who and show some examples later next month.
Stay “tooned”!
